Hello!

This was our first fam dinner out to celebrate my sister's birthday!

We visited The Public Izakaya at 100am. You may have walked past it before - they have a large outdoor seating near the entrance of 100am.

Izakaya in Japanese basically means a place where you can stay and drink. In Japan, they seemed kind of intimidating to me (especially the smaller ones with regulars), but in Singapore it's more like a dining establishment to me. Lol.

There are TONS of things on the menu (without pictures, lol. Maybe refer online if you need them).

Are you ready? Here we go!

Oden - six types : so warm and comforting especially since it was raining that night. The soup was sweet but rich!

Fried shrimp - very salty, great if you are having beer.

Mentaiko tamago!

Skewers!

Baked crab gratin with lil bits of macaroni inside. Sweet and creamy.

Grilled squid yaaaas. We asked for some lemon to go with this.

Negitoro don!

We ordered this real early on but it only came in the end so we were really stuffed.
These Tori Karaage were HUGE! Like the size of a tennis ball each. Fun though!

Mini Okonomiyaki and Buta Kakuni, a very tender simmered pork that we called dong po' meat haha.

Anddddd yes that's all. So stuffed. Will be back to try some of their other dishes.

One friendly waitress lady really made our dining experience great - she was helpful, attentive and gave us tips, explanations about the food and recommendations too. V.S. some of the other staff who forgot or did not fulfil our requests. They seemed to be short-handed that day but her attitude  and customer service really impressed us!

The tableware was also cute, with wooden bowls and pretty cups too. Really added some ambience points. Plenty of families, groups and couples hanging out here~

Hi friends!

I'm gonna take you on a little virtual trip to Tigerlily Patisserie today.

First, join the queue and check in via a wooden QR code sign! Very atas.

Some sweet pastries for starters!

The Kouign Amann is sweet and lovely. It's nutty and all kinds of wonderful.

The Pain au chocolat is crispy and flaky and certainly did not disappoint. I enjoyed the way they folded it, resulting in beautiful grooves more like a croissant rather than the usual slab of 'pie' format.

Now let's have some breakfast.

You can pick your side, and also the type of bread you prefer (ciabatta, sourdough etc).

Now let's welcome the stars of the show! ✨

The Beehive ($11) 🍯

Yes, it is pricey but we decided to go for it since we're here. These were the popular picks - the 3 people in the queue before us ordered the exact combo too, probably because these two cakes look the most intriguing and delicious.

And it was a delightful experience indeed! This dessert was not afraid to go big on the sour tartness and balance it with a light, sweet and airy cream. It was also fun to find the 'treasure' of a ball of honey jelly inside. 9/10, very refreshing and good for sharing.

Next, the Pistachio Marimo! ($10)

I used to own real marimo balls because they are so CUUUUTE! I had two small ones (boba size) in a bottle, and a large one I got from an aquarium shop. I can't resist these cuties!

Now you guys know I loooooove nutty flavours like pistachio and houjicha, so this is super delicious to me! On top of the frangipane (almond cream) and praline, this is 100% nutty flavour heaven.

10/10
You can eat it all yourself and not share it. Haha.

We had a fun time! The interior design of the cafe was modern with bold stylish accents and many arches. However, even on a Thursday morning, the cafe filled up really quick with a queue outside, and items were getting sold out real quick as customers picked up big boxes of desserts. Beware and go early!!!

Big thanks to my friend wenxin for getting me out of the house (for leisure and not for work...) - I can't remember the last time I went out and took so many photos. Haha XD

Hello my friends!

Welcome back to the blog.

Recently I went food shopping after work and found lots of interesting snacks.

Case in point:

'Magic Pretz' $2

I'm guessing that if you eat it with another Pretz flavour, you get treated to a different flavour combo.  Pretty cool but since they didn't sell the other flavours in single packs, I skipped this. (Also I feel like this Magic Pretz would just have a creamy wheat flavour.)

Another thing I spotted...cheese curd bars.

I didn't know this was a thing!

What really caught my eye was this packet of Rainbow Calbee chips!

It was $3 and looked cool so it went home with me.

I was really hyped up about this! It seemed to boast 7 flavours.

Opening the bag,... I felt a little miffed after buying into this whole 'rainbow' concept. As pictured: crab, clam, fish, squid, shrimp, seaweed, mushrooms as ingredients.

But I can't complain, they showed the product clearly on the front. No actual rainbow colours.

I naively thought that there would maybe be 7 different types of chips?  Lol. (This is my fault because I tend to eat these colourful senbei snacks from Muji and they're multi flavoured and multi coloured.)

Oh well. Let's take a bite.

Two things stood out.

1. The chips were not crispy. (Manufactured May 2021, Best before Nov 2021)

2. The chips tasted... normal. The closest comparison would be the Calbee Seaweed flavour. There isn't any significant or unique umami despite the ingredients they used. Meh.

What can I say... I tasted disappointment that day.

:(

Also, where is the 'Rainbow' that was the USP?

Turns out it's here:

My sister says it means something like 'taste the rainbow'.

Okay....

Well, this was clearly a case of hype from packaging material for me as I can't read Korean. Very disappointed as I'm a big fan of Calbee! Guess I should have Googled first before purchasing?!?!?!

*Since the chips were not crispy, I ended up mixing them up with white rice because I have been seeing people mix potato chips as flavouring for their rice or noodles. It was...fine.

Till next time,

Skye

Hey friends!

I saw a lovely Instagram video by @emilylfigueroa on how to make mango boba, and it looked really simple so I decided to give it a try!  Blogging her recipe because I referred to her video x1000 to check for instructions XD

Ingredients:

  • Tapioca flour
  • 1/2 cup Mango
  • 4tbsp Water
  • 1 tbsp White sugar
  • Honey/ Brown sugar

Steps:

Making the dough (about 10-15minutes)

1. Soften 1/2 cup of mango, sugar and water in the microwave. Mix.

I only used less than half of one side of the mango. (I weighed it for 1/2 cup.) In hindsight I would add more mango to get more of the mango taste.

2. Add in 1tbsp tapioca flour gradually. Microwave in 15s intervals for 1 minute.

3. Add in 1-2 cups of tapioca flour gradually until you get a ball of dough.

My bread making skills came into handy here as the dough was very sticky at first! No fear, just add flour and knead to get rid of lumpiness. Haha.

4. Shape tapioca balls! You can use a knife or scissors to cut into small pieces, or simply pull out pieces with your hands. Roll.

If you want boba that fits in your boba straw, you have to shape it smaller as it will grow larger after boiling. Mine were a little too big but I liked them cuz they were nice and chewy.

Cooking (Takes about 40min-1hour!)
1. Boil (med/high heat) for 20 minutes.

They look like little potatoes. So cute!

2. Switch off the heat, cover and let it sit for 20 minutes.

3. Rinse with cold water to get rid of excess starch. You should see a little transparent layer!

4. Add honey/brown sugar water mixture.

5. Add to your drink of choice!

Thoughts:

The mango taste is not very evident, so I would add more mango the next time round and experiment more. The texture was excellent! Very chewy. Also, this batch was mum-approved. Hurray!

@emilylfigueroa also has another video on how to make strawberry boba so I'll definitely save that for future use too. Heehee.

Storage
I only boil the boba when I want to eat them I have 2/3 left! You can freeze them until your next use.

Fun Meter: High!
This was really fun! I enjoyed making the small boba pearls. It was a nice project to break the monotony of covid-19 life.

Enjoy!
