Today we're trying out a pancake mix from Don Don Donki.
It contains 4 bags of flour mixes!

All you need to do is add an egg and 100ml of liquid of your choice. I used soya milk.

1. Add the liquid to the egg and mix.

2. Mix in the flour gently.

3.Pre-heat your pan to medium.

3. Each mixture makes about 3-4 big/thick pancakes.
Pour 1/3 of the mixture into pan and turn the heat down to low.

4. Add a tbsp of water at the sides and cover with lid for a fluffier and more moist pancake!

My first pancake came out a little burnt because I was too chicken to flip it in time. Oops.

I had no blueberries nor strawberries at home so we'll make do with a nice little tangerine!

The outer layer is crispy but the interior was soft! I'm really surprised by how fluffy it was. It's a little like a cupcake. Love that.

Much better than the usual pancakes I make - those tend to be flat even though I add baking powder.

Let's go for a second round. This time I tried to stack the pancakes like how souffle pancakes are made.

They ended up rather ugly HAHA.

Nevertheless they still tasted fine! I added honey to them. You can also add maple syrup, whipped cream, nutella, ice cream or basically anything you like!

Would I recommend this pancake mix?

✖ Price is ~$7.90 ($6.50 from NTUC) Plain flour is about ~$2.20.
✔ Saves you time and effort - you don't have to measure and make your own flour mixture
✔ Good for a light breakfast for two (or one if you don't want to share)

Love,
Skye

Hey guys! What's sizzling?

I went to check out another Yakiniku chain. Last time, we went to Yakiniku Like, but this time we tried out Yakiniku-GO!

Don't be fooled if you see no physical queue. Nowadays many restaurants employ the ticket queue so keep your eyes peeled and grab your number!

This Parkway Parade outlet is way more spacious than the PLQ Yakiniku Like outlet. In other words, dining here is much more comfortable!

You order through a QR Menu system. We went for the recommended sets that come with rice, soup and a choice of a small salad or kimchi.

Me: I thought they're Japanese? How come they have Kimchi?
Sis: *Shrugs*

Our sets came within minutes.

Here's the Double Karubi Set (200g, $21.80) which consists of Beef Short Plate and Beef Boneless Rib. Shout out to the yummy Short Plate, what with the melt in your mouth texture.

The other set, Yakiniku-GO set (200g, $21.80) which includes a ribeye steak, beef tongue and beef short plate.

The beef steak was surprisingly good!

We also enjoyed the yuzu dipping sauce! Felt like it had a hint of garlic and black pepper too. The other sauces were alright, nothing particularly special.

Kimchi was also good with beef though it seemed out of place in a Japanese grilled meat restaurant. I wonder if they offer kimchi in Japan???

Here's a fun way to enjoy your beef~

Make a beef 'sushi'

1. Set up your beef like how you would make a sushi roll.

2. The chopsticks method.
Just grab and go!

Enjoy!!

There are also side dishes like edamame, chawanmushi and veggie platter (mushroom, corn, sweet potato). Lettuce costs $3.80 while butter costs an extra $0.50.

Okay, I think I need to make a comparison chart between the two restaurants since I keep comparing them in this post anyway. (This could have been a good YouTube video eh?!)

SHOWDOWN!!!

The cheapest sets for both restaurants are priced at $9.80 (Karubi 100g). However, Yakiniku Like's price is nett while Yakiniku Go will charge you GST and Service Charge.

Both restaurants offer Wagyu, steaks and et. Yakiniku Like offers pork jowl while Yakiniku Go offers seafood like scallops, squid, prawn and salmon.

Yakiniku Like offers beer while Yakiniku Go only serves stuff like green tea and fizzy drinks.

Both offer a range of dipping sauces, but my preference so far is Yakiniku Go's yuzu garlic sauce.

Special promotional dishes from both include Cheese fondue from Yakiniku Like and Spicy Miso Nanban set from Yakiniku Go.

A quick look at some online forums in Singapore suggest that people prefer the value for money Yakiniku Like over Go. Some also prefer Yakiniku Like's quality of meat. Yakiniku Like has been around for a longer time though, so maybe that could also be a deciding factor.

For me, I hate queueing so maybe a bigger outlet with more seating like Yakiniku Go will be preferable because I have a higher chance of being seated faster 😂 A hangry girl is a dangerous girl.

Which do I prefer?

Currently I enjoy Yakiniku Go's beef steak, but it is the most worth it when you get it in a set ($21.80 for 200g) VS ala carte $14.80 for 120g. The steak however includes beef tongue which I don't want to eat...

If I have time to kill (and queue), I'll go for Yakiniku Like! However, if I prefer a more comfortable and spacious environment, Yakiniku Go is a decent choice too. Also, because Yakiniku Go has a member program where I already have 3 stamps and am eligible to redeem a free dish, I think my next visit will still be to Yakiniku Go.

What about you? What do you like or dislike about these two restaurants? Leave a comment below~

So... can GO or not? Yes!

Hey guys! I came across some film entries from Point and Shoot 2022, a competition held by nuSTUDIOS Film Productions.

This year, the theme is 'Shadow', and over 250 student film makers have submitted entries. The competition, in its 5th year, have students undertake this 55h film challenge where they must plan, shoot, edit and submit their film upon the release of the theme. How exciting!

The actual award ceremony will be held on Sunday, 27 March 2022, but here are my favourites~!

There were a few films that centred around the quintessential Singapore bus stop. Perhaps it is the second hot favourite element for SG films after HDB flats? However, not to worry, because each film has its distinct flavour.

SHADES OF US by Hot Air Balloon Production
This film used poetry and sound to its advantage. Beautiful shots as well!

The Last Ride by FISHFLOPS
I did not expect this ending :'(

Next, we have this tense drama.

IN HIS IMAGE by One Crew

Even in a short span of 3 minutes, captivating stories are delivered with an effective final twist and punch. Great work!

Next, let's check out something fun and quirky.

Immortal Fish by Train 404

Now for some suspense...

Her Perfect Shadow by One Take Production

This started out so creepy but I liked the twist too. Everyone is so good at timing!

One more film to share...did I save the best for last?

Cricket 蝉 by END SLATE PRODUCTIONS

Look at this beautiful tone, cinematic story telling and crisp sound.

Not every production had these but they shot and DELIVERED 👏👏 Well done! Also, many groups took a very literal or dark take to the theme 'shadows' so this treatment and angle was refreshing! Wonderful!

•·················♡·················•

If you're keen to check out more films, hop onto nuSTUDIOS' Facebook Page to view and also to vote with your Like!

I hope you enjoyed these shorts, I certainly did! Passion projects really inspire me and I'm feeling heartened by everyone's entries. Well done everyone! Long live Singapore film!

Hey guys! I finally got the chance to try some nostalgic traditional cakes from Uncle Lee Confectionery.

photo of shophouse of shop called uncle lee's confectionery

I've seen the peanut cake on social media and was really keen to try it! Some backstory for you: Uncle Lee was the head baker from Hock Ann Confectionery and has been baking since 1984. He has since struck out on his own after Hock Ann closed. His new physical shop is located in the Bugis/Haji area, and is really close to the Sultan Mosque!

We made an order online and did a self collection. Some cakes get sold out really quick so we made sure to order in advance. Delivery is also available at $12 islandwide (barring places like Sentosa).

First up, let's check out the Nostalgic Buttercream Cake ($20)! We selected the Peanut and Vanilla Sponge. This cake also comes in flavour variations of chocolate sponge and chocolate sprinkles.

Oh... the peanuts smelled so fragrant!

The vanilla sponge was soft. Think denser than a pillowy chiffon pandan cake but still soft and fine.
The traditional buttercream was fairly light with hints of sweetness and saltiness.

Yum!!

We also ordered the Kaya Cake ($28). It's 8 inches.

We were too busy cutting the cake and I forgot to take a photo of it in its entirety 😂

However, here's the cross section!

The outer layer is a fragrant pandan Kaya 'jelly', or 'kueh'. Best eaten cold! This cake is light and can be eaten in a few mouthfuls. It also passes the 'not too sweet' Asian standard with flying colours.

How does it compare?

The colour is markedly different from kaya cakes from say Bengawan Solo. Bengawan's outer layer is also more stiff while this one has more of a soft and wobbly consistency.

Concluding Remarks

At first I preferred the Peanut cake but now I think this Kaya cake is more delightful. Both cakes are not shockingly AMAZING! or a MUST TRY, but they are decent, good cakes!

Tips 🍰

  • The cakes need to be refrigerated due to the cream etc, so make sure you have ample space in your fridge. You can also slice them and store them in containers.

  • However, the fluffiness of the sponge will be affected due to it being in the fridge, so try thawing the cakes in room temperature for about 15 minutes, or best, enjoy the cakes on the same day for ideal softness!

  • To try two flavours, we split the cakes between two households. At first we included this half and half as a request but they did not cut the cake for us. It is likely due to

    (a) the cakes being of different height. Therefore, they are stored in different sized boxes.

    (b) the kaya cake also tends to be more 'wet' due to the jelly, so it's probably not a good idea to put them together without some kind of plastic of aluminium foil divider.

  • The cakes use a light sponge that is really easy to eat. Great for light desserts and tea time. You probably do not need to share a slice...
Other items on the menu include traditional butter cake, banana cake, custard puffs and butter cookies. You can check them out on their website: https://uncleleeconfectionery.com/ or at their physical shop!

I wasn't drawn to the movie at first. Glad I gave it a chance though. Here's the trailer!

Thinking back, I probably wanted to give this a skip because I feel like I was once like Mei Mei. Unfashionable, slightly chubby, nerdy looking kiddo with spectacles. (I think I'm still like this actually LOL). Who wants to be reminded of their uncomfortable childhood?

There are plenty of Asian elements - down to the beautiful cooking sequence that Ghibli fans will appreciate. Temples, lore, a study table that resembles my own, obnoxious in your face aunties... there was plenty for me to relate to! But it isn't the same for everyone.

criticism from... a white man

You might have heard of the news where a white critic was lambasted for his review.
By rooting Turning Red very specifically in the Asian community of Toronto, the film legitimately feels like it was made for Domee Shi's friends and immediate family members. Which is fine — but also, a tad limiting in its scope. Some Pixar films are made for universal audiences. Turning Red is not. The target audience for this one feels very specific and very narrow. If you are in it, this might work very well for you. I am not in it. This was exhausting. -Sean O 'Connell (Cinema Blend)

Basically he felt like he was unable to relate to the show.

...

W-O-W. Who can relate to a girl that can change into a red panda? Or talking toys in Toy Story? Growing up, we watched cartoons and shows that had American sets and American ideals. Sleepovers, macaroni and cheese, shoes in the house, calling your mum by her name... I could not relate but we still enjoyed the shows anyway.

I guess growing up where your culture isn't in mainstream global media and film does make a difference huh! Perhaps we are more accepting of films from different countries and cultures. Reading subtitles is just another way of life. Also, isn't the whole point of movies or books to let you escape into new worlds and scenarios? /Shrug. Read more about the debate here.

In the end, the core messages from the movie are still about love. Love for family, love for friends, love for the community, and above all, love for yourself and the strength to find yourself and forge your own way forward, as it is in most Disney films. Nothing really changed here.

4Town - the hottest boyband in town

The idea of 4Town is also hilarious because it's so on the nose what with fandoms everywhere today. Though the style is old-school,  4Town is a boyband like never before! There's diversity and representation. From some angles, Tae Young looks like Jimin omg.

The most 'mixed' boyband/boy group I have seen IRL so far is maybe Citizen Four. Check them out here with a Kurt Hugo Schneider collaboration.

I don't think they are even together anymore, but Josh Levi is actually voicing one of the 4Town members! I love Josh Levi's album. BTW, this dude can sing, dance and write. Gosh.

Yup, I enjoyed this movie more than Encanto (even though Encanto's soundtrack was excellent).

Come on, this furry red panda is just too cute.

I won't comment further as I want to keep this post spoiler free.

Enjoy!

Love,
Skye

Heya! I have a book recommendation for you guys today!

I found this one via NLB Libby :)

The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin

Genre: Dark sci-fi (themes explored: death, violence, cruelty, discrimination, slavery, abuse)

What's it about:

In a post-apocalyptic world, humans live in 'comms' and struggle to survive in world that experiences catastrophic climate cha
nge. Humans with special abilities allowing them to manipulate energy and matter are called Orogenes. They are feared, vehemently hated, mercilessly killed. Many of them therefore keep their abilities under wraps. Young orogene children who do not know better or  somehow reveal themselves (usually under duress) are immediately killed, or recruited into the Fulcrum, where they are trained to become weapons. Which is a better fate?

Thoughts:

A rocky start

The story is told by different perspectives and may be a little confusing at first. And to be honest, the first few chapters were slow to appeal. I thought to myself, "Is this a book that belongs to my Did-Not-Finish shelf?" Furthermore, I found the book extremely dark. The images were frightening, and the violence and cruelty felt so unnecessary! I was really uncertain about this book and wanted to abandon it especially after I saw some book vlogger exclaiming that 'After the first 100 pages, I just could not bring myself to care. Life is short. I'll read something else. ' (This is about a different book he read.)

Nevertheless I managed to power through. The pay off came only towards the end of the book, but wow, what a rewarding tie up! The writer really caught me off guard. And look where we are! I'm actually reading the second book in the series now.

A refreshing premise

The manipulation of energy / rock is also a fascinating premise. Many authors focus on popular elements like fire and water, so the immersive geo-based world was such a treat. Geology is actually everywhere but mostly ignored by the layman D: I once read a non-fiction piece where someone spent a day with a serious geologist. They traipsed about in New York and the expert pointed out many rocks and structures that had a lot of history.  I can't remember the exact rock they discussed, but I did a quick Wiki search and found this:

Rat Rock, also known as Umpire Rock, is an outcrop of Manhattan schist which protrudes from the bedrock in Central Park, Manhattan, New York City. The rock has striations caused by glaciation.

Imagine that! Rocks being frozen in glaciers - and now in Central park! Haha.

Three body who?

I feel like I tend to compare almost every sci-fi book I read nowadays to the Three Body Problem. Perhaps it has left the greatest impression on me!

Anyway, this is definitely NOT like the Three Body Problem at all. It is much more savage and dark. There are still 'science-y' parts but the world is decidedly less urban. This is a world where people travel by horses or on foot, have apprentices, hunt and farm.

Some things are better left unsaid

The author loves the kind of writing that is a little open ended. The reader has to deduce and do a little thinking. There were so many times the word 'oh' was used. I suppose it's because she has so much to discover and realise.

The node maintainer is seated in it, anyway, so it must be -
"Oh. Oh."
Oh, bloody, burning Earth. (Pg 207)

The reader definitely needs to step up and fill in the gaps. Sometimes this is an annoying technique, but when the writer employs it to imply something sinister, the horror is further amplified. I saw more of this in Book 2 (The Obelisk Gate)

Overall I can't say I enjoy the series in the sense that I find it pleasurable - it is hard to, what with all the extreme cruelty.  (Side note: How did I finish Hanya Yanagihara's A Little Life? Maybe that was more tragic? T_T The things in this book just repulse or shock me. )

However, I do enjoy the story-telling. Themes like discrimination are not easy to tackle and are not here for us to 'enjoy' in a hedonistic fashion, but we can still listen, reflect and learn.

Definitely worth a read!

BTW, this book won the Hugo Award for the Best Novel in 2016. Rightly deserved! Hope you like this recommendation!

Love,
Skye

Oops, I apologise for the cheesy blog title. I think I used to be more poetic when I had a Tumblr. Guess things just feel more formal here.

Another personal update of thoughts and (mundane) stuff that happened recently~

I just ate two tangyuans (glutinous rice balls)! Whoever thought of this sticky chewy treat deserves a round of applause.

My family used to eat 5 tangyuans each from the Chinatown brand.
Nowadays we have just two rice balls each. A step towards a healthier lifestyle? Haha.

I still snack, of course. However, instead of eating the whole packet, I eat just 1 or 2 of the snack. (Or maybe just a handful.) ~Improvement~

My sister bought these:

Previously we tried the sea salt and lemon flavour which was pretty refreshing! These pale in comparison. Do not recommend. (Sour cream and onion and lightly peppered and salted flavours)

•·················♡·················•

I've also been subscribing to so many vlogs.

Here's my new find! Darling Desi has a strong Victorian vlog aesthetic. Think fancy tea cups, old-fashioned night dresses, beautiful wood furniture, paintings in gold frames. She even writes with a QUILL. The landscapes she shares are also breathtaking.

The only downside of such an aesthetic is the incompatibility of modern items. For example, I found the scene where she took her vitamins really jarring because...these familiar plastic bottles don't 'belong' in that era. Haha 🤣

Nevertheless, we understand and we will continue to suspend our own beliefs and enjoy this imaginary world.

Such dedication.  I take my hat off to all you creators!

I'm gonna scoot now because I have some illustration stuff to work on! I hope you have a pleasant week ahead :)

Love,

Skye

I'M SORRY! GOMENASAI!

It's Monday today and I forgot to blog yesterday...

D:

I am thinking of blogging less to accommodate one of my other projects.

My main concern is my own energy level and amount of time I can dedicate to these new systems I want to build.

Other than that, I thought about how people say we should specialise in something and focus on one skill - but hey, life is really difficult if you ONLY focus on one thing. I don't want to chase perfection, I want to chase expression.

Soooo

I have decided to rely on coffee to make me extra productive. 🤣🤣🤣☕

I hope this will let me lead the full life I want to lead. To me, we only have one life (lol YOLO) and I want to make the best of it! I may not be successful in the strictest sense but at least I will create the best me and the best environment where I get to lead my ideal life!

•·················in other news·················•

I finally started watching Street Dance Girls Fighter, the youth version of the wildly popular Korean TV dance survival program, Street Woman Fighter! I watch these episodes for free on Viu.

Wow, never underestimate the power of teen energy. The exuberance is through the roof! I felt really moved and uplifted by the energy and fervour of these youth who have a strong passion for dance. It's such a great format really, to have the women dancers mentor the aspiring youth. They really helped paved the way and continue to do so.

A (bad quality) screenshot that shows the insane energy in the studio!!!

Especially moving was the group Floor who specialised in lesser known genres like afro and dancehall. I can't imagine how inspiring it would be to see a crew that dance these styles and make it to the finals. it must have been super encouraging! I suppose this is what they mean by 'representation is important'. Role models really do inspire the next generation.

There was a lot of screaming for their idols and tears after their performances. The pressure is high after all, with so many top girl crews from all over Korea participating in this cut-throat survival program. I really love their bravery and energy - I can't stress this enough because I feel like this fire is lacking from my own everyday life, and my circles. All of us have become subsumed into adult working life and the few who dare do different are always 'brave' to take a risk. It's sad but it's also practical - we gotta grind to pay the bills!

In this show, all the girls are so brave, hardworking and dedicated. You can't fake this level of dancing without practicing for a long time! The girls also have crazy off the charts charisma and confidence. You wish you had that kinda confidence at their age! Amazing.

I love the fire!!! It really inspires me to do better.

•·················♡·················•

Recently I also got to play basketball! I'm thrilled! I certainly missed it and getting to play it really brought on a huge wave of nostalgia. I hope to continue to enjoy these hobbies that bring me joy! I must defy all the negative, boring aspects that usually come with being an adult!!!!!

Yeah. So today's post is more about a personal update! Talk to you guys soon!

Love,

Skye
