Caught this boxing flick featuring Jake Gyllenhaal.

WHAT'S IT ABOUT: Billy Hope (Jake G.) is a boxer who wins loads of titles, has a huge mansion and lives da life. His life goes downhill when his wife is shot dead by accident. Now competely consumed by anger and grief, he loses control, loses his license to box, loses his daughter, loses his money, his 'friends' and etc. Can he save what's truly important to him? He seeks out a new coach, learns new techniques, discipline, and gets back into the ring to fight for what's important.

How was it? The trailer projected something more dramatic. I kinda came to watch the train wreck happen, but it didn't really happen. This is what happens when trailers over-sell a movie, I guess (but yes, the trailer did its job).

What's good: Good acting by the daughter, Leila.I hope you have a bright future in Hollywood.

Some humour here and there by coach Tick. Great acting also by lead actor Jake. Heard from Cass that he trained up and all and refused to have a body double. Read here for his hardcore training regimen!

Respect for his commitment to the trade. Also, yay to training sequences (my favourite things ever, esp in fiction, movies, manga and anime.) Like the one where he trains with the rope.

What's meh: The show would benefit from tighter editing and cuts. The cinema goers were very restless in this show- you could see/hear people shift around often- the movie was too draggy. I would argue that maybe we're too used to Marvel action paced movies, but this movie could have really done better in its flow. Very plodding pace which can get tedious. Other than that the story is pretty predictable and all which is fine and acceptable, it's a sports drama movie after all.

ALSO HAHA JUST REALISED THE DRUGGIE IS RITA ORA no wonder she looked so familiar.

Soundtrack: I heard Eninem and The Weeknd. Haha okay apparently Eninem had a big role to play in this movie. For the soundtrack at the least! Not too sure about everything else.

Verdict: Slow movie. Not the best boxing flick I've watched either, but the fighting/training scenes were good. The rest of it...ehhh? Mehhh? Nahh?
If you're here for like abs, er, you're watching the wrong show la. Go watch Magic Mike XXL or something haha.
If you're here for gore, glory and guts, skip this too. No crazy euphoric winning sports scene either.
If you're looking for a feel good sports movie, SKIP this and go watch a team sport movie instead. Guranteed feels.

In all I wouldn't really recommend this, especially if you're an impatient person.

蒙面歌王 Masked Singer (China) - The latest singing competition! My dad started watching this so I hopped on the bandwagon too. In this competition format, competitors, who are professional singers, don a mask and hide their identity. I think the idea was taken from a Korean singing competition.

The masks and costume concepts are very impressive! Love it.

Love this venetian (?) mask style- so intricate.

铁扇欧特曼 aka Iron Fan Lady
白棱镜 aka White Prism
黑天鹅 aka Black Swan

Also, lol.
羊驼 aka Hipster Alpaca

I like how the singing talent contest has evolved over the years, from American Idol, Britain's Got Talent, The Voice, 我是歌手,etc etc. You can see how the organisers are always trying to add a fresh element to bring in the crowds.

They pit two singers against each other per Round, and the judges and audience gets to vote. The 5 judges only take up 5 votes, while the audience makes up the rest of the 300 votes. LOL.

I got a little confused at first, but if you win, you get to take off your mask. This differs from the Korean version, where the losers take off the mask. The Chinese version helps everyone save face too, I guess. The contest organisers also say that they chose this route because it is a professional singing contest, as compared to the Korean variety show version, which focuses more on entertainment than singing quality. They also say things like : "To a singer, when you win via your singing prowess and not other things like visuals and etc, it's a big achievement by itself." Very touching moments caught on camera SOBS T_T

“今天我唱的”如果没有明天“ 我想要送给很多想要放弃自己的朋友们。可能我们会经历很多挫折,甚至有时候你真的很想放弃。 但是我会用我的音乐,用我的力量,给大家继续加油。 我们要继续勇敢地向前走!”

If you want to watch it online, here's a link: YouTube Season 1
I can't find Season 2 but here's the unmasking winning scene. SOBS SOBS SOBS

Catchya guys later :)
Hey guyz whaddup.

Gonna share a couple of finds this week, really digging them!

1. Hitorie

A Japanese band with a very interesting dancey sound. The singer wowaka used to be work with Vocaloids! Check out: Rula Rula & Talkie Dance.

I really dig the guitar here.

2. Ven (벤)
A Korean artist I found through YouTube related videos! Love the R&B sound, like a very smooth, smexy, asian Chris Brown, but with more chill than dancey vibes. Oh wow they categorise him as 'HipHop/Rap'. Well they're a very smooth, chillout kind of hip hop then. Lol.

3. Alessia Cara
A 1996 girl with clear, spunky vocals. Loving her lyrics for her original, 'Here'. I can totally relate man. It's about how a girl is at a party and she's like, "I wanna go home man".

"Excuse me if I seem a little unimpressed with this
An antisocial pessimist, but usually I don't mess with this
And I know you mean only the best and your
Intentions aren't to bother me, but honestly I'd rather be
Somewhere with my people, we can kick it and just listen to
Some music with a message, (like we usually do)
And we'll discuss our big dreams, how we plan, to take over the planet
So pardon my manners, I hope you'll understand that I'll be here (ooh) "

If you have cool finds just drop me a message or comment below! I love finding new music ;)
Hahaha so I caught Ant-Man. Wasn't really planning to but things just happened. It was a fun ride though!!!

Me before the movie: Is Ant Man like because he got bitten by an ant?

(Btw, no.)

I know Ant Man sounds really lame and everything hahaha.  We were not expecting much from the movie though it was a Marvel one. It was pretty funny and entertaining though! As Pok puts it "it went the Guardians of the Galaxy" route.

even the poster looks 'meh'

SPOILERS EVERYWHERE, you have been warned:

Summary:
Dr. Pym invents some crazy atom thing that can shrink things (and people.) So Scott Lang, our resident "good" and badass Robin Hood-esque criminal gets shrunk when he dons the Ant Man suit. He learns to control ants, use different types of ants, including the flying ant as his pegasus- he affectionately names it Antony. (Get it, get it?)

Scott's ride, Antony.

The antagonist is this guy called Darren Cross, a former protege of Dr. Pym gone down the wrong, twisted path. Sells tech to Hydra, drunk on power. So basically Dr Pym, his daughter Hope and Scott hang out and try to foil his plans. Funny moments everywhere.

Epic fight scenes. Hahaha.
Scott Lang is very likable as a character- a very Chris Pratt kind of vibe imo.

"Dafuq is this shizz?"
His daughter Cassie is super adorbz!

DAWWW <3

WATCH IT?
Verdict: Why not?  It's not a wham bam omg awesome movie, but it definitely brings in the fun and laughter. It's cliche as all superhero movies go, so nothing new there. Likable movie!

All's good.

Other thoughts:

  • How much did Baskin Robbins pay them man...
  • Mega loves Luis and friends for the funny retelling of stuff . "Fo real?" Hahaha. Perfect comic bunch.
  • "That's a really ugly looking dog!"
  • Y NO Tony Stark cameo? Haha.
  • Somebody please go through quantum ideas with me. How do you cross universes?
  • I liked seeing Falcon (from Avengers)
  • You never thought insects could look cool.
  • Can I haz friends like Luis and co? They always have your back yo. Hahaha.

Found this book in the library and decided to give it a go! Contrary to what it looks like, it's not a book teaching you how to insult people. Rather, it goes through the psychology of it, helps you to identify the types of insults people throw, and also suggests reasons why and what you can do it about it.

The book is a rather 'sociological essay' kind of book in my opinion- it gives examples, quotes, and references together with the writer's own observations etc. However, no worries, it's still very easy to read! I laughed at some of the witty insults too, especially those from Churchill.

Here are some things I learnt from the book:
  • "It is obvious that we insult someone when we intentionally cause him pain by something we say or do. But we also insult him when we cause him pain by something we refuse to say or do." - It's so easy to insult people and hurt their feelings even when you didn't mean it. Tough life, folks.
  • Insults are relative. Try telling an esteemed artist that his art is 'sick'. Haha.
  • Basic kind of insult: Person to person. A very straightforward, direct insult. Level: easy

Ie: You 're a big poop.
  • Next level: Quasi-verbal insults. This can mean making a farting sound, sighing, smirking, booing, whistling, miming, giving the finger etc.
  • Practical jokes can be an insult too- to make people feel humiliated.
  • The Cold Shoulder: The silent treatment is a popular social weapon- "67% of Americans admitted to using it on a loved one and 75% said a loved one used it on them."
  • Self-insult, aka self-deprecating humour. When you do this, it is difficult for others to make fun of you. Tight defense right there.
  • Group insults. Insulting entire groups through stereotyping etc (ie. my school/group/race/job/whatever is better than yours)
  • Backbiting, aka talking behind people's backs. You do this when you feel socially threatened. The example in the book gives a scenario about A, B and C. A and B are good friends but then comes along C. A is not happy about this and backbites C when she hangs out with B.

And it's up to B on how she responds. If she joins in the backbiting, A is relieved. If B is defensive, A will feel more threatened than ever. And A might lose the friendship between them.
  • Often teasing insults are used to test waters, to see if someone changed. Ie. John has a promotion. People feel uncertain if he's gonna lord it everyone or not.

"Eh John, upz liao la, now sit in the office kiao ka liao."
    Possible responses:
1."Ya la, whole day shake leg only, damn shiok! Aiyah still need to kiss boss backside la, nothing changed."
    2. "Haha, thanks I worked hard for it. It's easier than I thought to be promoted!"

^See the difference when you self-insult?  *This is a very skewed example, btw, haha.
  • Dogs can insult people too by showing preference to the house guest rather than the master. OOOO BURNNN!
"I like your friend more than you."
  • Subtle Digs: Honestly this chapter is very depressing. So many ways to fail at a social event.
  • 10 000 ways to fail, and offend people

Scene: Go to a party hosted by a friend.

    1. Never try the food she made
    2. Try and fail to say it's nice
3.Try and say it's nice but never ask for recipe
    4. Leave the party but  thank her.
5.Thank her but fail to invite her for some other thing

Scene: Post a picture of you winning an award, graduating, whatever. Thanks friends and family in description with a list of names.
    1. Why you list me in the middle? (Not happy with the order)
    2. Why am I the last name?
    3. Why you never mention me?
    4. (...and to all the people I have left out, you know who you are) sensitive, offended person response: If I'm so important you won't leave me out lor. Hmph. (lol)

(Even if people don't tell all this to your face, they're thinking it.)
Minefields everywhere. I think mostly you just really can't please everyone.

  • Insult by Omission: failing to invite someone to an event.
  • Insult by Implication: Getting advice from people then never follow through at all! ie. You didn't follow my advice (you didn't value my advice)
  • Secondhand Insult: A was invited to a party that B wasn't. She may or may not have known you were not invited, by :
A: What are you wearing to the party? I can't wait!
B: Huh? What party? I wasn't invited la...
A: Huh? But I thought yall so good friends she sure invite you...
    B: ...
And then days later in a group gathering say shit like "Oh the party was so awesome!" ( silent thoughts: too bad you were not there, pfft :P)
  • Backhanded compliments."Prof is a great teacher cause he doesn't make us learn stuff."
  • Burning by praising others: ie. Praise someone and not the other.
  • Sarcastic comments: "Wah, good job la! Now everything is spilled."
  • Ambush insults: Most commonly: "You're such a great person...not!", "You made it so far in life... considering you didn't even finish school wow." These kind of mixed insults occur often because someone feels vaguely threatened by the successes of others. They worry that if they give undiluted praise, their social standing goes down. It's a put down that means "You did well, but it doesn't mean that you are better than I am."
  • Joking relationships. Came across this in Sociology last time. Basically you're so familiar/comfortable with someone you have a 'joking relationship' with. Teasing is a form of interaction that brings people closer.

Quote from the book: "Then, if you are lucky, the day finally arrives when the group confers an affectionate nickname on you or makes you the butt of a joke. The fact that the group abuses you means that they have embraced you as one of their own."
  • Insults as Entertainment. People pay to be insulted. It's a challenge of wits. Also, Yo Momma jokes- contestants keep going until you can't.
  • "Why are the most painful insults we experience likely to come from those with whom we have close personal relationships?"
-The closer a relationship is, the more likely we are to value it. (If we didn't value it, whey did we invest the necessary effort in the first place?)

-The more value in a relationship, the greater the sense of loss it would be, the more intense pain would be.
Examples: Source of pain. Same words, different relationship.
Doctor: You need to lose weight.
    You: Okay ;_;

Lover: You need to lose weight.
    You: DAFUQQQQ?
  • People with high self-esteem are more okay with you insulting them- they have a happy bubble that protects them. He doesn't feel threatened by the successes of others.
  • High self esteem but fragile self-image aka narcissists. He thinks he is brilliant but he wants your approval too.

  • Programs of self promotion, in more subtle ways: ie. Tattoo 'loyalty' in a different language on your arm, and when people ask you about it, have a chance to tell your story.
  • Ok this one is epic. "Another recent trend is the use of Internet for self-promotion. People create web pages to tell the world who they are, what they stand for, and what they have accomplished. They might round out this promotional effort by sending out many times a day, messages telling what they are doing, eating, or buying. Those who do this, I should add, are unlikely to characterise their online activities as a form of self promotion. To their way of thinking, they are just keeping in touch with friends."

HAHAHAHA LOL Guilty as charged? For people who use Snapchat, Instagram, Twitter, FB, Blogs ... aka people like me... lol. Well, that is that. Haha *flips hair*.  (Also; BUT IT'S TRUE? WE'RE REALLY JUST KEEP IN TOUCH WITH EACH OTHER? HAHA? Lol.)
  • THE CURE. What you can do to deal with insults.
Most people insult to get a rise out of you. Non response is good. Saying ''thanks" works even better- it baffles people. Going the "Lol you have not seen how lazy I am at HOME," aka the self-deprecating/self insult method also helps.
  • Saying "Whatever" can lead to more angst. You are dismissing the person's feelings/thoughts, your feels are irrelevant! The power of dismissal. People don't like being dismissed.
  • Ok, here comes the more philosophical part. I like this part. It's about Stoicism.
"Most people are unhappy, the Stoics reasoned, because they have chosen the wrong values by which to live in. Esp when they value fame and fortune.

Though people seek to attain both fame and affluence, they're mostly doing it for the social status. If frugal lifestyles were to be admired and enhances their social standing, they'll do it. It's frustrating to have the get rich lifestyle because it never ends. Insatiable appetite for money, fame, status. The goal is arbitrary, when is "rich enough"?  So the Stoics think you're giving yourself unnecessary stress. You'll live life feeling dissatisfied with what you have, regardless of what you do have.
  • One way to 'cure this' is to /ragequit and quit the system. If you don't give a shit about the social hierarchy game, you don't feel threatened or insulted by people. Not easy to do of course. Stoics recommend putting virtue first instead. Ie. good values: being courageous, magnanimous, self-disciplined etc etc etc. They also like tranquility (something I relate to Zen principles..?)
Alright, check this book out if you wanna! I kinda summarised it in a very informal way here, but do check it out if you want to read it in it's full glory. Gonna check out more about Stoicism soon, sounds interesting. Catchya later!
Hey guys. Decided to make a new 'type' of post here on my blog. Not very surprising really, considering how much I like to EAT! This ain't sponsored la lol (though HINT HINT HINT hahaha)

First up, Green Pea Cookie!
I chanced upon Green Pea Cookie on my Facebook feed! (Yes, sharing posts work on people like me.) It's the start of their Super Soft Launch in Singapore, so of course must support. I ordered one box to try :D

Comes in a cute little box.
Green Pea Cookie started off as a Kickstarter!  I'll grab a quote from their page there:

"To most of you, Green Pea Cookie is a completely new taste and the first of its kind in the USA. It is a scrumptious, guilt-free, vegan cookie that we believe would definitely put a smile on your face. Some people tell us that it tastes like a shortbread cookie, some say it tastes like a Mexican Wedding cookie."

For us Singaporeans though, it's something like a CNY goodie!

Met Gigi yesterday to collect my Green Pea Cookie!!! She was very friendly and we shared a train ride together lol. Nice meeting you :)

10 000 pea puns everywhere. Hahaha.
Got the Original flavour! Can't wait for the chocolate dipped ones to be available in SG.
Omg the food clip is TOO CUTE ain't it

Let's take a bite...
1. I am a fan of CNY peanut/almond cookies so I wasn't surprised that I liked this!!! <3
2. It's soft and crumbly, a little moist (easy to crush, be careful! :O) and has bits of crunchy peas inside. The best thing to do is pop the whole thing into your mouth.
3. Taste: Mostly sweet with hints of salty bits of peas~
4. Verdict: YUM! GIMME THOSE CHOC DIPPED ONES! HAHA #chococolateaddict
5. The box said recommended portions a day are 4 cookies... but I already ate.. XXX (undisclosed number).

The box also came with two adorbz stickers daaaw!!
Green Pea Cookie is great for people who love snacks, vegans and etc. You can get them by sending an email to gigi.teo@greenpeacookie.com or messaging her at Facebook! She's really friendly so no worries. This is still a new-ish thing and new delivery/collection options will be made available eventually! Each box is $12 SGD and has about 36 cookies. Do give it a try :) I enjoyed my cookies. Find out more on their Facebook or website www.greenpeacookie.com.

2. Chocolate Egg Tart Bread
Ok TBH I forgot what the little board at the bread shop said it's name was. But close enough la huh?

This costs $1.50 from Bakery Depot at Eunos MRT (near Gongcha).
Verdict: NOMMMMMM NOMMMMMM NOMMMMM I liked it. (Haha, I'm not a very precise food blogger huh? The egg tart custard rather surprised me, it was smooth and sweet. *_*)  Good for a sweet snack~ Sweet tooth on the prowl.

3. Lastly, I finally got to eat DURIANS!

My family usually buys cheapo durians, but this year we decided to give Mao Shan Wang a try. Definitely more pricey, but damn, so worth the wallet pain.

But honestly half the time I don't know what type of durian I'm eating.

This dude was saying 'HELLO? HELLO?'. Seems like durian shops in this area all have birds as pets. This one was fierce haha one uncle tried to touch it and it went berserk.

Durian Auntie opening our MSW! Creamy, edible gold manz.
Then I went home and ate two, pathetic pieces and I had a sorethroat and breakout on my face. ;_;
Over the past few days the rest of the durians have been attacked by my family, until there are only 3 pieces left! It's time to step in. Superhero TH swoops in on the leftover pieces of durians and puts them in the freezer to preserve them for when she can eat them after her gigs. THEY'RE MINE, YA HEAR ME?

#possessivefoodie

Yo guys... whaddup. Feel like a super lucky duck to be invited to be part of YouTube's SHINE Creator Panel event! I had LOADSSSS of fun I can't even. Didn't expect to be so high lol. Imma blog about what went down here!

Warning: Am still on some spazz mode so this blogpost is gonna higher than usual lol.

We got to visit Singapore Google HQ! When I received the email invite I was like O.M.G. why would I pass that up?

We went on a tour around the 4 floors of Asia Tower first. There were tons of kitchens and food everywhere LOL. Apparently you put on weight when you join Google. Hahaha.

Cool shizz! There plenty of play spaces (foosball, pool etc) and meeting pods. The Google people working there were all very used to people touring the place and shouted 'Hi's and all haha! Fun vibes!

Google Lego wall!!!

Werk it in the gym.

I really liked this haha. HADOUUUKEN!

TGIF means...free flow beer, cocktails and food.
It was so hapz in this canteen! Like.. literally buzzing. Amazing energy at Google!

Aight. I'm sorry for all the shitty photo taking I was too happy to actually be exploring Google and didn't bother framing things properly. (Also, I used my phone gasp gasp)

We hung out at this chillax room and got to know each other better!
It was a really intimate setting. I was expecting like foldable chairs and a stage, but we got plush chairs and beanbags instead. Awesomes. X)

Most of us are musician type YouTubers haha, but there were also people who did games, vlogs, make up, and parody etc! It was very cool to meet so many new different people!

AND FINALLY...THE YOUTUBERS ARRIVE~~~

I was already fangirling here. How are they real? Left to right: David Choi, Lydia Paek, Jrodtwins, DANakaDAN, Juncurryahn!
It was a short Q&A session. Some people raised pretty interesting questions: "What would you do if you woke up one day and all your YouTube videos were gone?"- Joshua

And also the YouTubers shared tips on YouTube strategies, getting audiences etc etc, how they work on their videos etc. The key thing I took away from the sesh was "CONSISTENCY". This means you gotta keep going man. Good sound advice. It's also cool to hear about how audiences grow up with you? Which is why I had many surreal moments meeting and talking with them. Like... woah. You guys have been part of my life since secondary school.

All my photos are either derpy or my eyes are half closed but nevermind. I will savour the moment. Haha. Hellooooo juncurryahn!

DANakaDAN. He snapchatted us in the cool lifts LOL it was fun.

With the awesome Jrodtwins! Got to talk to Justin (left) haha he's super friendly! I hope to always stay so down to earth ahha. If you don't know them, they're like the male versions of Jayesslee. Check them out man. My favourite cover is Uptown Funk.

DAVID CHOIIIIIIIII WHADDUPPPP
Also, what the hell but I didn't expect 'networking' to be so fun? Hahaha. I always thought it was an awful, horrible and forced thing, but today was really FUN?! Just months ago I was like completely tongue-tied, freaking out and all when I met a famous dude (star struck also), and I couldn't even make conversation properly haha. 'Progress is progress' huh! (Thanks Oli <3)

So confused here but lol maybe when you meet people of similar interest/in the same industry etc it's really different. Awesumzz nice to meet yall man. Everyone is so cool :)
