Heya!

Are you a big fan of bubble tea, or boba?

My tastes have changed over the years. From 100% to 50%, and an occasional 30%. From chocolate ice blends from Each a Cup, to Oolong milk tea variants without pearls. I love pudding too, but only the ones from Taiwan. Haha. I also dislike the super milk kind of BBT, and don't particularly enjoy the brown sugar ones either.

Saw this checklist a while back, and decided to do it!

I tried 12! How about you?

Get a blank BBT checklist here.

Ever since I spied this one time on the Burpple app, I made it a point to come back to try it. One-for-one bubble tea? Sign me up please. I've since been back a couple times.

Hollin

Hollin serves different flavoured pearls every day. It makes for a catchy marketing tool too.

We went on a Friday, and that meant Peanut pearls! They also have cocoa, coconut, matcha pearls etc.

Caramel Macchiato with peanut pearls at 50%

Despite the queue, service was fast and the staff was chirpy and completely unfazed. We ordered these drinks:

1. Caramel Macchiato with peanut pearls at 50%
2. Rock Salt Macchiato  at 25%

I thought I would be impressed with the pearls, but no, instead our hearts were completely captured by the salty foam of the macchiato! I can't wait to visit Hollin again and get another macchiato, maybe even without pearls (trying to diet here.)

The pearls were interesting but not very outstanding.

On a separate occasion, I asked the staff if the strawberry pearls were nice and he scooped out a small cup for me to try. Aww.

So I got to try these strawberry pearls, which were too sweet and fruity for me, but maybe perfect with their fruity drinks.

In the end, we got yet another macchiato again, LOL. #addiction.

They also have student deals to make things more affordable, so check it out!

Also, I'm looking for yummy macchiatos to try, so HMU if you have any reccs other than Koi.

Till next time,
Skye
Hey guys!

I finally got to check out some really hyped up oldies. I've always heard about the classic romance drama, The Notebook, and how heartbreaking it was that there was not a dry eye in the cinema. I mean, The Notebook was given a movie reference in the recent Men In Black International too.

So I finally caught it on Netflix!

The Notebook
Duration: 2h40min
Starring: Ryan Gosling as Noah and Rachel McAdams as Allie

SPOILERS!

The movie didn't get off to a good start, in my opinion.

I really didn't like how Allie was asked out on a date. Noah basically threatened to kill himself in order to get her to say she wanted to go on a date with him. The movie started out a little sociopathic really.

Then they did supposedly 'different' things like lying on the road. It's all fresh to the little rich girl from the city, doing things she would have never thought to, with this country boy. I understand the appeal and the novelty. It's fun to do silly, thrilling things.

A car really came by, though.
They get together real quick. It was a big summer romance at 17 years old.

There was a lot of girlish screaming and laughing. Jumping into lakes, running and hugging, and kissing for almost 40% of the movie. I would NOT recommend this to a sad single person. Haha.

For example, there's lots of playful kissing and hugging. Don't watch if it makes you feel woeful being single.

Rachel McAdams was wonderful as the spirited Allie. You can't tell that she was Queen Bee from Mean Girls. Great performance!

There are also some dancing sequences, but not as contrived as in La La Land, which I was not impressed by either. Haha.

This looks really fun!
Allie is introduced in the first few scenes as the daughter of her father who is 'richer than god'. Lol.
Later Noah is invited to a Sunday luncheon where he's the only one donning black in a table of snobby people dressed in white. Much symbolism here haha. Her daddy sports a fancy moustache.

The guests ask him what he does (lumberjack), and how much he makes - 40 cents and hour. Imagine the crazy judgy looks he invited, but he seemed oblivious to it.

Later Allie gets into a huge fight with her bf, when he overhears conversations by her parents saying that he's trash. Basically he's not good enough for her because he's dirt poor. He tries to leave her, only to incur her wrath. They kind of break up, and before they can make up, her parents move her out of town the very next day. Drama. They do not even get to say goodbye.

Then, Noah writes to Allie a letter a day, 365 letters in all. But her mother intercepts them, so she never receives any word. Noah goes off to war.

Allie meets a smart, dashing and charming guy while volunteering as a nurse. He's super rich too, from old Southern money. Her parents wet themselves in excitement. They fall in love and he proposes.

Amidst marriage prep, she sees Noah in the papers. She rushes down to see him again.

They make up.

This looks straight out of The Little Mermaid, how dreamy indeed.

Allie was super indecisive though. Her to-go solution is to escape. She couldn't choose between her men. On one hand, she was finally reunited with her first love. On the other hand, she sports a huge diamond ring from her rich fiance. WhO will ShE cHoOse?! (This is my first attempt to convey my sarcastic tone through the Internet.)

Sigh.
In the end, her mother tells her to make the right choice and returns the letters. Noah has superb penmanship.

Andddd...it's a happy ending! No prizes if you guessed it right.

Concurrently there is also another timeline in the future where an elderly man reads to an elderly lady. It's not difficult to piece this together - they're old Allie and Noah.

I don't really understand why people can cry buckets over this...

These people would probably cry their soul out when they watch some serious tearjerkers, like Asian dramas and movies. Haha. GAJIMA~!

LOVE!
  • Absolutely loved the soundtrack. I'm currently listening to it on Spotify.
  • Loved the gorgeous, beautiful cars. Today, they're vintage. Can you imagine if we still drove around cars like these, but with today's tech? So stylish!
  • Lastly, Rachel as Allie was outstanding. She definitely carried the whole show.
One funny tidbit I saw was that the director wanted to cast someone not so handsome, so they got Ryan Gosling to do it. Lulz.

Verdict: It was okay, but don't expect to cry? 7/10

Cheers,
Skye

Men In Black International
Duration:  1h 55min

Is it me, or are movies getting longer, and longer? Is it really necessary?

So anyway. In my mind I remembered the original MIB to be really fun and funny. This MIB was only okay, and it plods along. Some people even find it super boring and lame for its shabby plot. Its only saving grace is the star studded cast, featuring our Thor hero Chris as Agent H and Valkyrie, Tessa Thompson, as Agent M. They tried the best to bring some energy into this tired plot.

One of the most cringey things was Jianhao being on the screen in the MIB quarters. I'm guessing every country gets someone noteworthy to be a cameo but WHYYY? I was a bit horrified.

The aliens were so-so, the fight scenes were okay, but there basically wasn't anything much that was interesting or particularly funny.

I did love Agent M's rise though. She's smart and capable. A little bit of a Mary Sue however. I'm guessing her character, as female, has to be rather politically correct. Thumbs up however for not being the over-sexualised sidekick but more of a main character with equal stature. Thank you for the representation though.

But huh. She gets recruited only after she said that she had no life? No relationships, no ties, no life, no anything. Even though she was smart, fit, logical, and scored super high in all the tests. What the heck is this ceiling? AND a fellow woman was doing the recruitment too. Parallels in life. Is this some subtext about how women need to give up things in order to move up in their careers? Aigoo.

Look at that smile! Such a cutie!
So Agent H gets to play the super dumb but brave guy. There's nothing much to say except he was really acting like a himbo or maybe let's say Casanova. Many times Agent M saves his ass and steals the show. Not digging the 'romance' that seemed to have budded at the end of the movie, either, feels really contrived. Not feeling any chemistry there.

I'm really looking forward to better movies from both Tessa and Chris! I wonder how it must be like to graduate from the Avengers and end up in the same franchise. Must be hilarious.

They tried really hard to HYPE this movie though. Saw lots of collabs with suit makers, watch retailers and of course, black sunglasses in a mall. They do look smart though.

On a side note, I was watching this YouTuber interview Chris Hemsworth and he brought him some Korean snacks to try. His favourite is the Lotte Chocolate Rice Mochi Pie that I featured some time ago!!! OMG, one similarity we share. /swoons

Giving this a 6/10, and I'm going to watch the original MIB series on Netflix instead.

Signing off,
Skye
Hey guys!

I've been wanting to go to L'eclair for the longest time, so I'm really glad to post this finally!

I'm a big fan of mini chocolate eclairs during catered buffets in school and events. But the eclairs here? Step it up 10 levels, these are exquisite!

L'éclair Pâtisserie

Ambience: Fancy! Purple royal meets geometric chic. There's also a huge round table that can fit 10 comfortably. We spotted a huge group of taitais here for afternoon tea.

Comments on Food:
The eclairs here are absolutely stunning and delicious!

Pistachio and Ispahan eclairs at L'eclair by Sarah Michelle

We ordered the Pistachio and the popular choice, the Ispahan,

The pistachio eclair was exactly what we thought it would be, light yet satisfying. It certainly did not disappoint.

The Ispahan was a pink cream, floral flavoured eclair with raspberries. The tart raspberries balanced the otherwise sweet flavours of the eclair.

We preferred the pistachio and would love to try the other flavours like the Kaya and the Violet Cassis.

Using Burpple Beyond, we enjoyed two eclairs and two drinks. The drinks, the Iced Matcha Latte and Iced Mocha were pretty meh. Perhaps the sweetness of the eclairs eclipsed the  drink flavours, because we felt the mocha's taste was very thin.

Nonetheless we'll be back for more eclairs as they were so yummy! Maybe next time we'll pair them with hot tea, as recommended instead.

Rating: 8/10

Reservation: On their website

You can use both Burpple or Entertainer here.

P.S. L'eclair also has a new outlet over at Changi Jewel!

Hello!

Welcome back to another session of Tea Time!

Today's tea is the T2 Detox from T2 tea. It's a loose leaf herbal tisane. If you're wondering what a tisane is, it's a plant based herbal infusion which usually contains no caffeine, as compared to 'true' teas. A tisane can be made from leaves, roots, bark, berries, and even seeds.

You may have chanced upon a T2 tea shop in Singapore, especially in the Orchard area. They have shops in ION and also in Somerset. T2 is an Australian company, and they use bold, bright packaging.

Ingredients: Fennel, juniper berries, stinging nettle, sweet blackberry leaves, lemongrass, marigold petals, liquorice root, spearmint, rose buds.

Sounds very interesting isn't it? Very different from the usual Chinese and Japanese teas. Been reading a lot of witchy books recently and this looks like what a witch would gather. Haha.

After a weekend of wedges, fries and junk food, what I really needed was a detox.

Let's take a cautious whiff...it smells mostly like straw really. Haha. There are whole, real berries though!

Let's get some hot water in there and steep it for 3-5 minutes.

Taste: Not much flavour, but the 'straw' kinda smell remains. It's not smoky nor sweet. I wouldn't say I dislike it as it is rather neutral tasting. It's okay, I guess.

Verdict: Very HYPE packaging, but taste wise I'm not a big fan as it tastes rather bland. Also has a 'straw' like kind of smell that come across as unusual for the usual black/green tea drinker.

Till next time! The tea adventure continues.

Heya!

Today I'm going to share with my experience with LSC Eye Clinic. TLDR: I didn't get to do the surgery.

The LSC eye clinic is located on the 16th floor of Paragon Medical.

I never knew Paragon had an entire medical wing, did you?

Well anyway. You can also find various other clinics there, such as plastic surgery, or radiology clinics.

I wanted to get Lasik as my eye degree and astigmatism is really high. My sister went to the same clinic but was turned away from surgery as her cornea was too thin. I wanted to check mine to see if I would qualify. I was cautiously hopeful and slightly fearful as well as I would opt for the same day procedure if I passed the tests.

Here's a photo of a poster that describes the flow for your evaluation day.

After registration, you are put through a battery of eye tests in a dark room. The staff will take you through say 8 different eye machines. Some measure cornea thickness, your myopia, and some even spurt air in your eye to check for eye pressure. Most require you not to blink for 5 seconds.

Later, I was given eye dilating eye drops. These stung a little. Then I was given a tablet and earphones to watch two videos on Lasik pre-treatment and after care. You also have to sign a contract thing to declare that you have understood the instructions given.

My appointment was 10.30am, and I had a lunch break 12.30-1.30 as the staff told me the doctor was not available then anyway. I got to leave at about 2.30pm.

Anyway, I gotta recommend the really frothy Milo from the Nescafe machine they had. It definitely cheered me up.

Finally, it was my turn to consult the doctor, Mr Marc Tay.

He was a kind and gentle doctor who shook my hand and got down to discuss my condition. He said for Lasik, two main conditions must be met.

Firstly, you should not have an eye disease. Mine were healthy enough.

Secondly, your cornea has to be thick enough as the laser would cause it to be thinner. Mine was too thin so I did not qualify for Lasik. The doctor recommended that I do not do the procedure and that I should wait another 5 years for technology to improve even further. He also suggested some other options like the one where you cut the eye open and put some contact lens inside. Can't remember the name, but I wasn't very interested in that.

He also offered to recheck my eye a couple weeks later since I was an avid user of contact lens. If you wear contact lens, you gotta stop wearing them for about a week before you go for these tests. Your cornea shape will go back to normal so they can assess the situation then. However I have already been wearing spectacles for close to three weeks in anticipation of this checkup, since my sister told me about some of the procedures. So I declined to have another checkup.

So anyway. It's more of an aesthetic thing so I just hope my eye degree will not increase any further. I had thought it would stabilise but last month I went for an eye checkup and my degrees have increased yet again! The horror. I wish I could turn that around. All I want is clear vision :(

Nowadays I make it a point to look out and far away, and also take the same chance to walk around the room or at least stand to exercise both my eyes and my body. I also time myself on the phone for say 20-30 minutes when I'm using the computer so I will remember to take eye breaks. I also use bluelight shields and generally try to reduce glare on my electronic devices. The fonts I use on my devices are bigger than usual too.

Don't be like me yah, take care of your eyes!

My eyesight is definitely crap because I read a lot, and as a kid, I read in bad light too. I used to have my head buried in books. I literally walked around the supermarket with a book, or read in the car. Yes, I have also read while walking and bumped into something like a lamp post. Lol.

Growing up I spent a lot of time on the computer, so.... it's just inevitable I guess.

My eye evaluation exams turned out to be about $40. They used to have some FB promo that was $1 but oh well lol but by 2.30pm I was too depressed to care.

...

Just read a bunch of successful cases and feeling a little jealous, but it's ok lol I'll live. Still grateful I can see, with glasses and contacts, at the very least. And that I'm healthy, alive, and kicking. I hope you have a good eye journey if you are considering Lasik - do your homework and follow your gut when it comes to the clinic and doctor!

This is their address, but you probably should make an appointment first.

Hi lovelies!

I've been reading as usual, and these are some of the better books I've come across so far! Maybe you will find something that interests you in this list.

A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness
Second book: Shadow of Night
Third book: The Book of Life

I got to read this series via the NLB ebook app! This book series starts off being rather Twilight-ish which just really tickles me. The second book bored me to tears while the action finally resumes in the third book, which is the creepiest and most evil. If you like magic, witches, demons and vampires, and don't mind some Twilight-ish scenes, this may be the book for you.

The book has also been made into a TV series, but I don't care for it because the actors and actresses do not really fit my image of what they should be.

The next two books are heavy hitters. I'm sure you've already seen these around!

Becoming by Michelle Obama

I really, really enjoyed this! We get to learn so much about the FLOTUS and what she was like when she was growing up. She was such a good kid and a super accomplished person. The funniest thing has got to be how she met Barack. This is a must read!

I loved how Michelle got her bro to assess Barack by inviting her to a basketball game. You can't hide your true self when playing sports. I also LOVED the proposal. It's so funny.

This picture of a sloping hallway in the White House is also major Princess Diaries VIBES!

One good thing about reading ebooks on the phone is getting to take screen shots.

Ok moving on.

Educated by Tara Westover

This is a real life memoir. Tara grew up in a family that didn't believe in many modern things - government, modern medicine etc. This is the story of the life she led and how she left and discovered how much more of the world she had not seen. Very mind-blowing and eye-opening.

The Gods of Tango by Carolina de Robertis
This is a brilliant and exciting tale of a girl who travels abroad and ekes out a new living and adopts a new identity for herself. I highly recommend it!

The Zookeeper's Wife by Diane Ackerman
This one is an older book, and has been made into a movie. The book really came alive for me as I visited Poland just last year. Sometimes it really takes a lot of courage to be brave and kind.

The Sun is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon
This one has been made into a movie! I saw the trailer before I read the ebook. Quite the cute story.

False Hearts by Laura Lam, #2, Shattered Minds
Disrupted by Dan Lyons
I've reviewed these thrilling books, set in a futuristic city, in this post.

and lastly, I read this one a long time ago about decluttering and minimalist life. Lol.

goodbye, things by Fumio Sasaki

I really like how the book started off with some shockingly sparse homes and rooms. It inspired me to clean up my room again.

Till next time!
Happy reading :)
Skye

Hello, we meet again!

Today's tea is a gift! It's a special LINE friends and Lipton Oolong Milk Tea in powder form.

Generally I'm more into tea leaf sachets, but let's give this a try, shall we?

Verdict:
As expected, the milk tea was very sweet and there was nothing very special about it. I'm not a huge fan of it really. The Oolong flavour is very, very mild. Can't really discern it.

As a general rule of thumb I do not like bottled milk teas - they are often too sweet or flat for my taste! If I have milk tea, I prefer cold and 'fresher' ones from bubble tea shops, where you can at least specify how much sugar you want.

However, the LINE friends are very cute so I understand why people cannot resist!

Till the next cup of tea! Thanks for reading my musings on tea.

Skye

Hey guys!

Very excited to release some new music! This time I made four Chinese covers and put it in a mini album/mixtape form.

You can listen to it here on YouTube. or just click this video to play!

About the making of the songs
The songs may sound better this time because the instrumentals are professionally produced (by the original artists)! What a difference it makes right? All I did were the vocals.
The most fun song to make: The last part of《想你的夜》关喆
The most difficult song to sing: 《有一種悲傷》A-Lin
This song leaves people in tears, but it left me in tears too, because of the high notes. This was really challenging for me, and though I may not be able to mimic A-Lin in emoting the right amount of sadness for the lyrics, I learnt a lot just by studying her voice and techniques.

Can I just say how much appreciation I have for A-Lin? She has incredible voice control and breath support. Crazy. She can change registers, create voice textures and emote so damn well. 你是神吗?

Also, when you listen to Eric Chou really, really closely, you'll find that his voice is actually more textured than it seems.
Lastly, I will never get over Shila's cover of 想你的夜. Amazing.

This project...was really challenging and I learnt more about my voice too! However, I think I should have named this album Loved You because there are so many moody breakup songs. Lol.
Well I hope you enjoy it anyway.
Love,
Skye

CBD friends, rejoice!

If you need cheap and decent pizza for a office party, maybe give Little Caesars Pizza a try.

$7.99 for a large 12 inch pepperoni. CHEAP or what?! You can also get a smaller pizza for one, plus a drink at just $6.

Little Caesars Pizza makes a really bold promise - pizza that is hot and fresh, when you walk in. No calling, no waiting.

And we did get our pizza hot and fresh, and FAST indeed. We opted for the $15 set which comprised of a large Pepperoni pizza, chicken and a cup of Pepsi. This is exactly my kind of romantic date!

Love is the moment when you open the pizza box. ♡

Let me hear you say, YAAAS

The pizza dough is made in-house daily, and the cheeses used are mozzarella and muenster. They were pretty generous with it!

The dough is not as dense as the ones from Pizza Maru, and I liked how simple and fuss-free the pizza was. Not overly greasy too.

You can choose from other classic American flavours like Hawaiian, Supreme, Veggie or 3 Meat Treat. Nothing Singaporean like Curry Chicken (Pizza Hut), Laksa (Pizzaexpress), or fancy like Truffle pizzas etc. No choice of thin crust either.

Though the 6pc chicken drumlets and wings were probably microwaved, they were served piping hot. There are several flavours, like buffalo, BBQ, or spicy. Taste wise it's more of cooked chicken with sauce, but at least these were juicy, not like the terrible experience I had with Wing Zone. Still loving the kind of spicy, slightly sticky kind of drumlets from BK or Pizza Hut though. Most likely these are already tuned to Singaporean tastes.

Many people get the pizza to go, but you can also choose to dine in.

You can also get some Caesar Dips for your bread sticks.

However, we saw a dude pour his cheese all over his pizza. Well that works too!

Sidenote
: Recently I've been playing this tablet game called Good Pizza, Great Pizza. Basically you make pizzas and run a pizza outlet. It differs from other food games because you don't simply tap 'sauce' to put sauce on your pie. You gotta literally draw it out, and place the ingredients. And the stuff doesn't look perfect like in Cooking Mama. Also, customers can be super GL and say things like 'I want a pizza like the sun, and half it four times'. It's up to you to figure out their orders, or maybe Google for walkthroughs. Lol. Haha I really enjoy it, though it has made me real hungry for pizza...

You can pay for your pizza via GrabPay too. Chalk up those points, baby.

Verdict: 7/10
No ambience, it's really a straight forward fast food joint. Simple and cheap pizza. Nothing super outstanding in taste but we all love a good, sinful yet cheap meal! Great for catering to the office.

Hi guys!

We've got a new snack in da house, big thanks to KT! Feeling really lucky to keep having new food items and tea to try out :)

These are Mini Bangkok Cookies, in Tom Yum flavour.

You get two packets in a box.

Taste:
There is generous seasoning powder. Mostly the snack is savoury, with a tinge of sweetness and a tad of spice  and kaffir lime. It's also not very spicy, unlike the Mala potato wedges I had recently, which makes it a great gift to bring back for friends, family, or colleagues.

The rice patty is crunchy and is made of baked and deep fried Thai rice.

Verdict: 9/10
A fun and yummy snack. I went through them really quickly and I know you will too ;)

Edit: My friend Ling Hong has found these in Sheng Siong after trying them in BKK! She also recommends the Crab Curry flavour! There's also Green Curry if you're keen.

Till next time,
Skye

Hey guys!

How have you been? I'm quite amused that this Tea Time section is still alive and kicking. I would have thought I would run out of teas to feature. But nope! Thanks to friends and family I always have something new and fun to try.

I'm no tea connoisseur, but blogging about drinking new teas is really fun for me!

Some weeks back I got to try this tea, the Carmien Rooibos from South Africa.

Firstly, what on earth is Rooibos? It means 'red bush', and rooibos is a type of herbal tea. You can prepare it hot or cold.

Rooibos is caffeine free, as compared to black and green tea. So you may consider it if you're trying to go caffeine free.

What did it taste like?

To someone who is used to drinking green tea or black tea, the rooibos can come across a bit shocking to the palate. It is ashy and smoky to me. Also a little earthy and somewhat overpowering in herb smell. Some people find it lovely, while others are disgusted by it.

I would say it is quite an acquired taste though!

Verdict: Well, I have to say this isn't my cup of tea at all!

Till next time,
Skye

Hey you guys, what's up?

I finally got around to watching the new Netflix offering, Always be My Maybe, a rom-com.

Always Be My Maybe

Duration: 1h 42 min
What's it about: Marcus and Sasha are childhood best friends. They lose touch and years later, all grown up, they have a reunion. Marcus wonders if he missed the boat.

The movie features Randall Park as Marcus as the leading man. You probably recognise Randall from Fresh Off the Boat. In FOTB, he plays a humorous dad, and sometimes comes across rather stiff, like a bad sketch.

In this movie though, I felt like he finally got to play a character with more depth and emotion, and I'm all for it! He's still endearing but not in an excessive way. Glad to see him going places.

I never knew how strangely comforting it would be to see someone of my colour be in an English film. You know people always talk about representation and all, and maybe it never really struck a chord with me, until this movie.

Crazy Rich Asians was a glitzy parade that screamed 'ASIANS!' , but I never really thought about this topic throughout the movie - it just felt so natural. I love that.

Ali Wong plays Sasha, a spunky celebrity chef who is fearless in chasing her dreams. A pity that Sasha is given a crutch about having a neglected childhood and later has it very quickly and neatly solved at the end of the story. She is way more interesting than Marcus though.

If you had to pick a quote for this onscreen couple, it would probably be "opposite poles attract". The two couldn't be more different. One is always on the go and has a global outlook (Sasha feels like a Sagittarius), while the other is happy in his comfort zone (classic Cancer). Sometimes breakups don't only happen because there isn't enough love , it's also about how unsuited your personalities and ingrained habits are.

Somehow Marcus manages to work things out (a very small coming-of-age, moving on arc) and get the girl, who is just so ready to settle even though he did close to nothing. I also wish that there were more scenes of them missing each other or loving each other even when they were growing up, or just tackling the 'maybe' part of the title. They just seemed rather certain of themselves and each other, rather than just 'maybe'.

A highlight in the movie would definitely be the cameo of Keanu Reeves. There has been much buzz about Keanu lately because of his role in John Wick 3. It was pretty amusing because he's so very stylish too. He plays Sasha's date.

Hilarious entrance.

Humour wise, I thought the film fared only ok. I guess when I saw Randall Park I thought of FOTB and unknowingly set higher expectations.

Come to think of it, as a rom-com, I neither felt that it was very funny nor very romantic at all.

Awkward hug

However, the soundtrack was great! Enjoyed the songs and seamless transitions for the different scenes (growing up timeline, traipsing over to another character's story).

Themes
The movie pokes fun at expensive, tiny food in upscale restaurants. Most of us common people can probably relate to this, because we just want huge pizzas and burgers kthxbye.

It also features some LGBTQ characters that would never have made it on screen maybe some decades ago. Progress!

Finally, old Asian people who are portrayed with dignity and not with some strange accents or as a comedic device.

There's also the mention of slut shaming. Overall the film wants to tackle a lot of things and themes but unfortunately does not have the time and space to do so. It therefore bravely tries to encompass all these things.

What I didn't like about the show
Despite being almost 2h long, the story seems...convenient and predictable at times. I believe they simplified the plot but I just feel that there was so much more potential in this film. It kinda felt like a pilot episode of a show, where you get just a tiny, hesitant dip in the pool to test the waters. Character development is not complete nor satisfying, and maybe this would have been better off as a TV series where they can flesh out more of the characters.

Nevertheless I think we just got a small nibble of better things yet to come. Netflix, please continue all these projects!

Verdict: A good 6.5/10. Great effort, but lots to improve on. The movie is kind of like a hyped up snack, or maybe fancy tiny food in this instance. You feel excited to watch it, but after that you're still feeling hungry for more.

Till next time,
Skye
