Hey guys!

Have you ever heard of a waterfall cake?

Well, I haven't until a few days ago.

First you start off like this, with a cake sitting pretty.

Since the flavour we got was the Boba one, there was a small plastic container of pearls for us to pour on the top of the cake.

Pop on the candle, sing the HPBD song, and it's show time!!!

Fancy or what!

The end result!
What's in the actual cake: lots of cream and sponge cake.

Pearls were not very sweet or flavoured but I wish they were! They have other flavours like matcha too.

The cascading cream is probably why the waterfall cake is named as such! Fun showy effect for a unique cake experience. Everyone in the restaurant was like :O

Thank you Maria for your discovery and happy belated birthday to my friends ^^

Hi guys!

What have you guys been up to? I'm finally back to update this little blog~

Today I'm gonna intro you the cutest restaurant near Lavender MRT! Thanks to my softball friends for introducing this place to us haha I had a fun experience for sure!

Eat 3 Bowls is a cute eatery that serves Taiwanese dishes like lu rou fan and oyster meesua.
You can find it nestled under some HDB blocks in the quiet, peaceful area located only a stone's throw from Lavender MRT.

Decor wise, the restaurant is modelled after a Taiwanese classroom, complete with desks and a blackboard.

You'll also see Taiwanese maps and stuff referencing 那些年, Jay Chou lyrics and songs (三年二班). Very cute. I definitely got the feels to visit Taiwan again!

Cutest furniture. Though the tables aren't the kind where you can flip open, the compartment below is really useful for storing your barang. Really takes me back to secondary school days when we stored all our books and things under our tables for months.
Small details add homely touches!
The picture menus are like students' exercise books! And here's a look at the order chit.

English and Chinese (behind) order chit, on top of the exercise book menu book with glossy pictures.

Eat 3 Bowls!
Eat 3 Bowls, as its name suggests, is a 3 bowl set featuring the 3 signature dishes of the eatery. Basically you get the mini version of the chicken rice, lu rou fan and the oyster meesua. Looks small at first, but I'll tell you that it definitely fills you up!

I was excited about the jiroufan as I was curious about how it would be different from our chicken rice. (Also,  Shohei Matsuzaki, the actor that worked in Taiwan, cooked it for his house mates in Terrace House 2019 LOL.) Well anyway from my experience, Taiwan chicken is more firm than the kampong chickens we use here in Singapore, so what you're having here will probably still be a little different. I love the TW chicken though and recommend it (with a lil dash of pepper and salt), if you have the chance to visit. Nonetheless, the version here was yummy and I wolfed it down!

The Oyster Meesua is YUM too! It's their own take on it, probably a little tuned to local tastes as well. Sorry for the lack of descriptions for the flavour and taste of the food - I think I'm not suited to be a food blogger lol. I find myself more creative when I'm riled up about bad food. Lol.

Side dishes of cabbage, tofu century egg, intestines and Taiwan sausage

As with Taiwanese food, you can't miss the quintessential bubble tea. Eat 3 Bowls offers bubble tea lattes, brown sugar bubble tea and more. I liked that they were not too sweet!

P.S. They use metal straws!

Sunday evening was a busy time for the restaurant. If you prefer not to wait, head down early to avoid queues, especially if you have a big group.

Some side thoughts: maybe at the start the classroom decor helped create hype and attract customers, but I observed that the customers that day didn't bother to pose or take lots of photographs unlike in some hipster cafes. I'm guessing people may have came for the decor at first and then stayed for the food, a great thing for a restaurant! Good strategy since the location is rather low key in the first place.

What I loved most about Eat 3 Bowls however was the most hospitable and friendly staff! They easily strike up conversations with their customers and sometimes even break out in song as they worked. Super cute and lovely. On top of fun ambience and yummy homely food, I rate my experience a big 赞!

Heya!

Today's novelty candy is the Nobel Boba Milk Tea Candy!

Some may say bubble tea is a staple in their lives. And the bubble tea inspired food and snacks are going strong! I mean, we have BBT takes on virtually anything - bread, cake, tarts, cookies, hotpot and of course, candy!

Let's open the wrapper! You'll get a Werther's Original looking kind of sweet.

I cut up the candy to show you the inside! There's a little precious tapioca pearl inside, albeit all squashed.

Taste: The Milk Tea flavour of the candy is strong! Think 80%-100% sugar kind of Milk Tea. The tapioca pearl centre is slightly chewy and fun to get to if you slowly suck on the sweet. I was quite surprised at how well they captured the milk tea experience.

Maybe if we refrigerate these candies, we can get an even more closer resemblance to the actual boba milk tea.

Well, if you happen to be craving for bubble tea, this is a nice quick fix. The best thing is that the candy is probably is just a fraction of the actual calorie and sugar count from actual BBT. Double yay for that.

Thank you to KT for getting these from Japan!

Here's a pic of the packaging if you want to look out for it. It's a fun gift for anyone who loves their bubble tea.

The Japanese words on the packet say: Tapioca Milk Tea Candy

Till next time!

Hey guys!

It's been a while since the last Tea Time. How have you been?

I've been busy with work things, attending weddings, and trying to get back into the groove of exercising. After taking stock of things in end June, I realised I need to buck up and exercise more often!

Today's tea is the Rose Oolong from Sucre.

This was a gift so it came in a little rose gold metal canister that contained two silk pyramids of tea.

You can see full rose buds in the bag of black oolong tea.

Taste: As promised, this rose oolong is a medium-bodied tea, even though I steeped it a little longer. In comparison, my Houjicha or English Breakfast teas will easily pass for full bodied, and I guess I prefer those!

Scent wise, the rose smell is not as sweet nor strong as the luscious English Rose from Whittard, despite having two whole buds of small roses.

The Oolong is also quite mild and only surfaces more as an after-taste.

Overall this is a pretty looking tea that is mostly mild on flavour profile and would probably be good for drinking with light snacks.

Till next time!

Hey guys!

So recently I had a BBQ cook out with my family and I decided to buy some MEAT FREE patties! Meatless 'meat' like Impossible Foods and Beyond Burgers have been all the hype for the past few months in Singapore, and I really wanted to give it a taste!

Spotted this on Redmart and ordered it.

Quorn is made mostly of mycoprotein, which is a type of fungal protein. It's high in fibre, low in sat fats, contains zero cholesterol and is soy free.

The packaging advised us to grill for about 12 minutes and flip often.

On the grill, you see our Quorn patties, some real sirloins, a stray zucchini (family's new fave vegetable), a piece of bell pepper, and PINEAPPLES!
I must say, grilled pineapples are the best things ever. It's gonna be my must-have for every BBQ!

Alright, after a while, the meat's cooked and we took a bite.

On closer inspection you start to suspect that this will not taste anything like meat or have its texture. Haha.

So here's my verdict comparing Quorn to actual meat patties.

Texture: Much like mock meat you can get from a vegetarian stall, nothing close to real meat. Rather dry as well.

Flavour: Too salty for me!

Price: PRICEY! $6.90 for two patties.

Overall: 2/10,  really not digging it. Can't see this replacing actual meat if given a choice.

I think I potentially set myself up for disappointment by choosing Quorn instead of one of the products from Impossible Foods or Beyond, which I've heard so much good things about. So hopefully the food experiences can only get better!

Impossible Foods use texture wheat protein and potato protein, so maybe that would taste better both flavour and texture wise as compared to the fungal protein /mycoprotein used by Quorn. We'll see!

It's exciting though if one day all these 'mock' meats will be the norm instead of the exception, especially since plant-based protein has a smaller carbon footprint than animal agriculture.

We can then have the best of both worlds, and enjoy our food with a clearer conscience. Looking forward to that!

Till next time,
Skye
Heyo!

What have you guys been up to? I can't believe it's already halfway through July. It's ridiculous how time flies so fast.

I went to Marina Square to check out this restaurant called Pasta e Formaggio. I think formaggio means 'cheese' in Italian!

We found that the restaurant was a hotspot for CBD workers to have a meal with their colleagues.

Tiger Prawn Aglio Olio $13.90
Five hugeee tiger prawns! Loved the sauce used here too.

Risotto di Caprese e Prosciutto Parma $14.90
This risotto was pretty, and creamy but I felt that the flavours didn't blend well. I'm indifferent towards Parma Ham so no comments on it. The buffalo Mozzarella cheese could be more melted though!

Much preferred the pasta for its stronger savoury flavour.

It was a simple, fuss-free and no frills meal! Plating and food was decent but didn't WOW us. We used Burpple Beyond (again) so we only paid $14.90 in total. If Saizeriya is a 2, I think Pasta e Formaggio is about 6.5. Good enough~

However, if you have no BB 1-for-1, there is a $9.90 lunch set that includes a soup/garlic bread, main and drink of choice. We overheard some guy saying, "So worth it!"

You can pay with Grabpay too! Yay to collecting points.

Hey guys!

Had the chance to visit Rookery at Capital Tower for lunch recently, so I'm going to do a post on it!

They have two outlets, one at Tanjong Pagar (Capital Tower) and another at Hong Leong Building which is closer to Raffles Place MRT.

Photographs today are by my friend Si Min :)

This is the Crabmeat Tagliatelle with tomato cream sauce. Generous portion, very satisfying and filling. Personally I prefer bigger chunks of crab meat instead of shredded though! Maybe I just want to eat lobster meat...haha.
😂

$24
I chose the Mizo Glazed Salmon, which came with zucchini noodles!

$28
On the menu this dish is written as Norwegian trout, but we were informed that they only had salmon for the day. Nevertheless the salmon was delicious, smooth and buttery. Enjoyed it!

The funky thing about this dish is definitely the Zucchini noodles, otherwise known as Zoodles! People use this to replace actual carb pastas. I've seen it a lot on fitness blogs and accounts and have thought about making some, but of course I'm too lazy to actually do so. 😂

Well, the ones at Rookery just taste like cold strips of zucchini with pesto mayo cream sauce on it. Lol. But I guess Zoodles are really a thing if you want to replace your carbs, cuz my friend who ate the pasta felt way more full than I was. A fun texture test for the curious!

You can check out the menu here.

Total bill came up to $30 with the help of the Burpple Beyond app, which was a cool $15 for each of us. Worth it!~

Staff here is very amiable and helpful too!

I also noticed that the Rookery had a stage set up for live performances, and I wonder what dinner nights here will be like! Ambience, food and service was great, which is everything a diner wants.

Verdict: 8.5/10

Warning: this place fills up fast during the lunch hour. In a blink of an eye the tables were all full. We were smart though, we made a Chope reservation.

Till next time!

Hi guys!

Today is a great day, because today is CAKE DAY!

I'd had my eye on Nesuto for a long, long time, and finally carved out some time to make it there!

It's a short 2 minute walk from the Tanjong Pagar MRT station.

Here's a pic of its shopfront, hastily taken because I was so excited upon arrival.

The Burpple Beyond 1-for-1 is for a slice of cake and a drink.

The friendly staff, a young lady, introduced us to each cake, and it was difficult to choose which to have, cuz everything looked so good.

I have no time or appreciation for small, fancy layered mousse cakes (on the first level), so I made my selection from the second level of cakes. They look very pretty though! I've tried such cakes before but frankly the cake eating experience just ends too soon. Just give me a huge slice of moist, crumbly cake, thank you. I'm plebeian like that.

Soon we settled on the Le Goma, and the Signature Yuzu Raspberry.

Aren't they such beauts?

On first bite, the Yuzu Raspberry packs a strong yuzu citrus flavour. I was expecting something more delicate, but I guess looks are deceiving. The pale pink frosting and notes of raspberry struck just the right balance. Overall this cake is a refreshing one after a heavy meal, and since the sponge cake is light and cottony, don't be intimidated by its height. 8/10

Next up, we have the Le Goma,  deriving its name from the French article 'the' and goma, the Japanese word for sesame. This cake has black sesame cream, which is a little mousse-y in texture, and is topped with some crumbly biscuit balls. Fans of things not too sweet will enjoy this. The cake sponge is on the lighter side, but still packs enough texture, making every bite satisfying. It felt denser that the Yuzu Raspberry.

I really enjoyed this. I've tried sesame cakes before and this is the best one I have had so far in Singapore! What a delight. 10/10

For drinks, I chose the Houjicha (lol, thought it would go well with the sesame cake) and my friend Si Min chose the Lychee Oolong, which was fragrant and sweet smelling. You get one free hot water refill.

Overall I enjoyed myself! Interior wise, think tones of millennial pink, grey, flowers motifs, marble, gold table legs, and gold forks etc. Very trendy and on point. The playlist was acoustic Boyce Avenue stuff though.

That's my YAY WE'RE EATING CAKE face.
Nesuto also offers a High Tea set and sell cookies too! Here's the address.

One-for-one promotion is available on Burpple Beyond, and you can also use Shopback to get extra value for your money. Our bill came up to about $15 for two people using Burpple Beyond.

Tip: After lunch, Nesuto can fill up real fast with OLs so it pays to be a kanchiong spider and come quick asap. Haha.

Also, important PSA: all the beautiful pictures taken today is by my friend Si Min (@lsiminnn). The uglier photos are shot by me. HAHA.

The blog has been a little quiet because I've been sitting on some other food reviews. I hope they get to see some light soon.

Hey guys!

I've been reading many books, and wanted to share this one with you, because I thought the messages and learning lessons in it were very pertinent to today's culture.

A Good Time To Be A Girl by Helena Morrissey

Helena is a British mother of nine children, and is married to a stay-at-home husband. She started her career as a junior fund manager at Newton, before being appointed to CEO, a position that she held for 15 years. Most importantly, she founded the 30% Club, aiming to achieve more women on boards and to tackle gender inequality.

The proportion of female directors on top UK boards has since increased from 12.5% to 30%, and there are now ten 30% clubs around the world. Yay!

Going to share some take-aways from this book. My own thoughts in italics.

What Women Bring to the Boardroom
  • Businesses need the right combination of human minds.
  • Deustche Telekom: "Taking on more women in management positions is not about the enforcement of misconstrued egalitarianism. Having a greater number of women at the top will quite simply enable us to operate better." say the company then CEO, Rene Obermann.
  • "When we have women on our boards, the dynamics are better, the decision-making is better, but there are too few of them."- Chairman of Centrica and Chairman of Lloyds Bank,

On Hiring
  • Chicken and Egg Problem: The male dominated, 'traditional' image and reality of the financial industry makes it hard to attract women and other under-represented talent.
  • Andy Haldane's Recruitment Challenge
Candidates A and B vie for a position. They take tests based on attributes that are useful for hiring. A scores 8/10 and B scores 4/10. So who should we hire? Most will say Candidate A.

However, what if the answers A gets wrong is what B gets right? And what if the questions existing employees get wrong is what B gets right? Though weaker individually, B strengthens the organisation with new skills they did not possess. Many companies now hire the 'best' individual, instead of the best person to complete the team.

I really like this challenge and think it's useful building all-rounded teams. You don't want just a team that can only attack - you need people to pass or defend too.
  • "I am concerned about positive discrimination. A brilliant man should not be overlooked in favour of a less talented woman, and if that's being considered, it means the business leaders aren't really thinking about what we are trying to achieve through diversity. It makes no sense to try to solve on form of injustice by applying another."

Firms shouldn't have to be forced into hiring diverse talents just cause they had to.
Women don't need to be Men
  • "You're not out for an equal slice of the cake as it stands today, you're out to change the recipe." - Kate Millett

  • Why do female leaders always need to be labelled as 'tough' and 'formidable'? This a perpetuation of the idea that women need to fit in with the male definition of power.
  • "I realised how much of my life had been spent working and being treated like a man. Even the way I was presented on TV fitted the profile. I was supposed to be 'scary, ball-breaking' but deep inside I knew I wasn't like that." - Mary Portas
  • If women can be encouraged to be truly women at work, they can make a big difference to the effectiveness of an organisation. The best performing teams are not necessarily the groups of the most talented individuals. It's also about the collective intelligence and dynamics that hold the team together.
  • Women feel less comfortable asking for pay rises and promotions, but getting us to behave more like men is surely not the right answer. Change the system and reward those with the greatest contributions instead.
  • "I've seen women being overlooked because it's assumed that they are not particularly interested - yet they have been waiting politely for someone to ask."

On Leave

  • "This isn't just about women, this is how men want to work too." Mary Portas shares her company practice of letting her top staff set their own hours and take open-ended maternity leave.
  • Netflix: Since 2010, Netflix's holiday policy has been to have no policy at all. Salaried employees can take as much time off as they'd like.
In theory this sounds amazing, but I've heard an anecdote that some companies in Singapore adopt this, and instead of feeling free to use their holiday leave, employees don't dare to take leave at all, for fear of being penalised in some way, or to be judged by their colleagues or bosses.

In this instance this move can backfire when the office attitude has not been changed or aligned to new, more flexible concepts. You can implement all sorts of new systems, but on the ground, if attitudes still remain the same, you unfortunately go back to square one, and sometimes even make things worse albeit your good intentions. No wonder nobody dares to rock the boat.

On Obstacles
  • Millett suggested that many of the ideas of the feminist movement at the time was being misrepresented and portrayed as destructive because the establishment felt 'very threatened'. She stressed that, contrary to reports, the movement was 'not out to demolish anything', but was looking to build new, additional lifestyle choices and for basic human riches to be bestowed on women. To become equal, but to stay different.

  • Warren Buffet: "The structural barriers are falling, but still an obstacle remains: too many women continue to impose limitations on themselves, talking themselves out of achieving their potential."
On Mentorship

  • One of the 30% Club programmes was its cross-company mentoring scheme. The male mentors said that their conversations had 'opened their eyes' to the issues faced by women in their own company, who either did not have the opportunity to raise the issues, or were not comfortable discussing with colleagues. The female mentees also felt that they were able to be more candid in their conversations with their mentors, rather than with someone at their own firm.
I think this is a great idea! Sometimes cold statistics from a survey cannot change your perspective, but a real person with real issues may. Stay open-minded and you may be surprised by what life brings you.

Problems Men face too
  • It's difficult for men too, to work out how to be modern yet 'sensitive', yet also relevant and successful in terms of status, earnings and power. Men are desirous of changes for women, but they are also uncertain over their own place in the world.
Hence, some choose to do nothing to play it safe.
  • Only 1 in 100 men took up shared parental leave in the first year it was available. Of those who did, 51% said they risked being viewed as 'less of a man'.
  • Women shouldn't feel under any pressure to copy men, and men shouldn't feel pressured to live like their fathers. The change will come when it happens for both men and women and when we all start to learn that we have options to live differently.
Using your Privilege to elevate others
  • If you benefit from a race, financial or gender privilege, use it to support others who do not have these privileges.
White and middle class? No matter. Use your privilege for good. Reach out to people with your unique position. I also want to see how this can be applied in Singapore where the majority is Chinese.

Thoughts from the Morrissey children
  • "I think the biggest obstacle to achieving gender equality is girls' lack of confidence, together with people in power not really seeing the need to change, or perhaps not wanting to change."
The status quo is comfortable for some players, and they will do things to protect their own status and benefits. Let's think about WHY young girls feel insecure. Is it reinforced by attitudes adults hold, subconsciously? Do you tell little children about what girls can and cannot do? If yes, you are part of the problem too.
  • "When people think who's in charge, many people think of men, because that's the way they have known things to be. As more women become involved that will change."
The development of Women's Rights, as a pyramid a la Maslow's Pyramid

Safety - Education - Civil Rights - Employment - Being Value - Equality
  • It's difficult to reach the pinnacle if the foundation is not secured, but the basics alone understate women's potential as human beings. Help to progress women on different levels of the pyramid. Those towards the top of the pyramid can have not just greater impact but wider appeal if they are mindful of the broader context.

Example: Alyssa Milano, Hollywood actress helped the #MeToo campaign become viral after tweeting, "If all the women who have been sexually harassed or assaulted wrote 'Me too' as a status, we might give people a sense of the magnitude of the problem." And that they did.
Other thoughts
I think it's important not to demonise the entire male population. Yes, some men are more monstrous than others, but painting everyone with the same brushstroke is so passe. Every community has good eggs and bad eggs. It's not fair to stereotype an entire community based on some bad behaviour. It's important to remember that men are not to be hated, and that they can be cooperative partners and allies in this effort of equality too.

What's Happening in Singapore

Answer: It's pretty sad. Let's take a look at the news reports.

Is there a glass ceiling for women in Singapore business?
By SHARANJIT LEYL
  • Singapore lags behind other financial hubs such as Hong Kong and London with just 9.7 per cent of women on company boards in 2016. It even underperforms neighbouring Malaysia, Indonesia and India.

  • “Companies and public bodies are led by male boards, interview panels for senior roles are almost always all male with sometimes a token woman from HR, departments are headed by men and we are surprised that women don’t get a look into leadership?” Lavinia Thanapathy, the President of PrimeTime said.

  • “There is a lot of denial from the government and from business that there is any problem that needs addressing,” she added.

  • Ms Chiang wants younger women to "get over it". “Recognise it exists and move on. Just do it, to be good in what we do as women, to perform and show, then lead by example.”

  • According to Junie Foo, Co-Founder of BoardAgender, an initiative of the Singapore Council of Women’s Organisation, having to appoint women for the sake of meeting a fixed quota can smack of tokenism.
  • The aim is to adopt a target of at least 20 per cent female board representation in companies by 2020. But it’s a lofty target she says as “to even reach 11 per cent, we would need another 75 more women directors,” she noted.
Singapore’s gender wage gap widens in 2018
By NICHOLAS KHONG
  • The wage gap between men and women in Singapore increased in 2018 to the widest in a decade, an analysis of the Manpower Ministry’s labour statistics has shown.
  • The report said: “Working longer hours may help with career advancement and eventually lead to higher pay.”However, this does not necessarily mean that women are working less hard than men, the report added.
  • "Women tend to spend more time on housework compared to men. In turn, this can mean that women end up working fewer hours at their job due to taking care of household chores and childcare, burdens that are not typically borne by men."

What I think : Companies recognise what's happening, but it seems like little is being done to spur initiatives. Singapore usually adopts a wait and see approach, hopping onto bandwagons rather than being a trail blazer, unless it's something that really threatens its existence (say, water issues). It's a less risky approach, and policy-makers are always hesitant to make changes to an existing structure that seems to be working (for some people, not all). In this sense, progress may be slower in Singapore than other societies.

Ending this post with a quote from the book! It was a very helpful and illuminating book, and I hope this post helps you get a little interested in the issue at the very least.

"I am only one, but I am one. I cannot do everything, but I can do something. And I will not let what I cannot do interfere with what I can do."
- Edward Everett Hale, American author, Historian and Unitarian minister.

Let's work together to a better world!

Hi there!

How is everyone doing?

Today I'm sitting down with one of my favourite teas, the Whittard English Rose. It's a loose leaf black tea with small rose petals, and I've found whole rosebuds in there too!

I got this tea on my first trip to London. It was my first time out of Asia really! We visited the Whittard shop in Covent Garden. Oh boy, the amount of tea there was mind-boggling. It was wondrous! Like something out of a Harry Potter movie, except for teas. You get to sample tea and hot chocolate there too. There are also fancy metal tins you can buy and gift to the folks back home.

So, back to this cup of tea. The aroma is heavenly, so sweet and graceful. The tea tastes as elegant as it suggests. I really love it. It reminds me of the beautiful countryside, or a romantic long walk.

It's weaker than my other black tea, the English Breakfast, but I like it the way it is.

The tea comes in a little plastic bag, and a brown cardboard bag with a manila envelope style button and string. Love that, so old school.

The bag says you can infuse the tea more than once as the leaves retain the flavour. Usually what I do is to make a pot, drink that, and make a new pot and wait for it to cool, before putting it away in the fridge for drinking the next day. I don't want to down too much tea at one go, sometimes it really gets my heart jumping and I can't sleep at night. This happens especially for Houjicha.

I hope you get to try this tea if you have the chance!

Love,
Skye
