Movie: Parasite

Hey guys!

Just wanna plug this Korean movie, Parasite.

Parasite
Duration: 2h 12min
Genre: Mystery/Drama/Tragicomedy

Directed by Bong Joon Ho, this movie is the first South Korean movie to win the Palme d'Or, the top award at the Cannes Film Festival.

Ever since I started watching more Korean movies this year, like Swing Kids and Extreme Job, I have been on the lookout for more K movies to watch. (Ok, I also really LOVED Train to Busan, and caught 1987 and Along With the Gods with Chanel too!.) My friend Lee Lee mentioned this and we really wanted to catch it!

I almost skipped this movie because of its name 'Parasite' and its horror looking poster. I mean, look at it. I will NOT subject myself to watching Asian horror because it hits way too close to home.

Do you have any idea what the movie is about? All I know is that it looks creepy as hell and also there's a dead looking body. Come on. With a name like Parasite, I thought it was some creepy supernatural story.

So I asked by BF to watch the trailer for me first. Strangely, it wasn't horror at all. And honestly we didn't really understand it much. (Neither did the people in the comment section, apparently.)

But now after I watched it, wow everything makes sense now.

I'm not going to break down the movie for ya because it would spoil you and ruin everything. And believe me when I say that this movie is worth your time.

How I felt at the ending:
  • Impressed. I get why this movie won a super distinguished prize, and why it's creating a buzz.
  • Pensive...which is why we have this post.
  • Somewhat rueful, for the way things played out.

And if I had to pick a few keywords to describe the movie:
  • Asian Family. Can you resist a tight-knit, funny family that has each others' back?
  • Socioeconomic Divide. Sad, but true.
  • Tragicomedy, with just the right dose.
  • Tension. The movie was built up very well. You know something is coming but you cannot fathom what.
  • Clever twists that will keep you on the edge of your seat for 2h. Parts of it reminded me of the heist movies I have been watching. A lot of deep scheming from the characters, which is always fun to watch.
  • In the words of Oli : "Super layered and everything flows so well"
Wonderful, wonderful movie. One of the more memorable ones I have watched in a long time! It's the type of movie that you finish and go, "Damn. I want to watch that again."

If you decide to give this a go, here's some assurance: You might not know where you're headed, but I will say that the journey is a fun, breathtaking one that has a great payoff.

Enjoy!
Skye
